Heat pump: description, functions, cost, is it worth it?

The effectiveness of the heat pump is that the principle of its operation is very different from traditional equipment.

Electric or gas boilers generate heat, that is, they convert fuel or electricity into thermal energy.

A heat pump is a device that transfers heat from a lower source to an upper source with the help of electricity.

What does the price depend on?

The total thermal output of an air-to-water heat pump must be sufficient for heating and water heating, taking into account peak loads.

The cooling capacity (cooling power) must be sufficient to cool selected rooms in summer.

On the basis of thermodynamic calculations, the demand for hot water is determined, and so the completeness of additional equipment (tanks, pumps, automatic safety devices and fittings).

Of course, a more powerful system is more expensive. However, due to the reduction in heating costs, air heat pumps for a larger area are more cost-effective.

Stereotypes about heat pumps

Stereotype No. 1 - "fan coils make a lot of noise."

This is often said by installers who either haven't tried to work with them or are just used to installing radiators. Noise from the fan is present in both ordinary split-type air conditioners and in floor convectors that are placed in front of windows. Therefore, fan coils do not represent anything that would disturb the silence in the house.

Stereotype No. 2 - "it's a complicated device."

In fact, the built-in automation completely handles its functions. As for use, as with any other device, it is worth checking it from time to time. If a specialist performs heat pump service once a year (cleaning filters, checking system pressure), then everything will work without failure for at least 12 years.

Stereotype No. 3 - "the heat pump does not pay for itself."

One of the main reasons for this misconception is the incompatibility of design standards with reality. The current design winter temperature for Kyiv is -22 °C. If we choose a heat pump not with an eye to saving money, but to cover the heating load to the maximum, its cost will double: from 6,000 euros to 12,000, for example. Outdoor air temperature statistics show that -22 °C lasts for only 5 days a year. And yes, for the heating period from October to April, the temperature 90% of the time does not drop below -7°C. Of course, the 12,000 euros take a very long time to pay off, since we use them only 10% of the time. But if we buy an ordinary heat pump for 6 thousand euros and install an inexpensive backup heat source, such questions will not arise. Simply for 10 days or 2 weeks a year, an electric or wood-fired boiler will also work (if there are problems with the energy supply), and the heat pump, of course, will quickly pay for itself.

The full cost of implementing a heating project with an air-to-water heat pump consists of:

  • the price of the heat pump (external and internal unit or monobloc)
  • according to the project - a storage tank or intermediate heating boiler of appropriate capacity,
  • fan coils (when retrofitting)
  • accessories - sensors, thermostats (programmers), controllers, mounting hardware, etc..,
  • installation work and commissioning.

As you can see, the cost of a turnkey heat pump depends on many factors.

Why is it easier to install a heat pump?

There is no need to build fire chimneys, make arrangements with the fire department and gas specialists, no need to have a gas plant and cut pipelines (if the kitchen is not connected to gas), no need to separate huge power from the power plant, no need to have storage or fuel rooms, no need for wood, pellets and other fuels.
